Thank you for your interest in Ovarian Cycle. Ovarian Cycle is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money toward the development of an early detection test for Ovarian Cancer. In addition to organizing our yearly indoor cycling event, we also want to provide the community with information about ovarian cancer and the great strides being made to fight it. The 2006 event is right around the bend, so if you haven't already, please sign up to participate as a rider or to make a donation (http://www.ovariancycle.org)!
For our 2006 inaugural newsletter, we would like to highlight an individual dedicated to the cause and two of the organizations who are blazing new trails in the fight against the disease. [top]
Kathy Zwald, Ovarian Cycle Board Member, will be interviewed on Good Day Atlanta on Tuesday, March 14th, along with her doctor, Dr. Edward Weiser. Kathy will be talking with Good Day Atlanta about her own experience with ovarian cancer. Zwald is an ovarian cancer survivor and is going public with her story of determination and belief—in herself, her doctors and in her faith—so that she can help other women facing the same battle that she has so bravely faced after her world was turned upside down in May, 2003. In November of 2004, Kathy finally reached the finish line, having gone through surgery and six months of chemotherapy, with 11 more of maintenance.
How did she manage? Was there a secret to not only coping but surviving? What propped her up when she needed it the most was the support of many, including her doctor, Dr. Edward Weiser. “He was the reason for hope; he was always so positive. I knew in my heart that I was going to beat this, but he cemented it for me.” Another source of inspiration, love and hope was a group that Kathy calls her All-Star team. A cadre of friends, family, support groups, doctors and therapists who all pitched in and helped her through the tough spots. “Gather your support team and make sure you surround yourself with people who are positive. If they’re not positive, then don’t keep them around.” Another pointer that Kathy would give to those who might face the same diagnosis: “Get up and move. If you move your body, it flushes out the toxins faster and your muscles don’t get so tired as easily. Even while I was undergoing chemo, I took part in Ovarian Cycle, a 100 mile ‘virtual’ century ride conducted in spinning bikes at Atlanta-area health clubs. I was pushing myself all the way through training and onto the six-hour final ride but it was a very positive experience for me and in turn, my fellow participants. By seeing me push my limits while on chemo, surely their ‘healthy’ bodies could keep up! I feel so strongly about the event and the organization’s mission, I now serve on the board of directors. I know I can make a difference in people’s lives.” [top]
