Ride to Change the Future - Saturday, April 26

Register now and mark your calendars for the 2008 Ride to Change the Future, taking place Saturday, April 26, at the Midtown Athletic Club! Together, riders will complete a six-hour indoor-cycling "celebration ride" to raise money for research to find a reliable screening test for ovarian cancer.

Last year's Ride to Change the Future raised an astounding $150,000 to ovarian cancer research. Don't miss YOUR chance to help change the future in 2008!

No previous riding experience? No problem! We offer a six-week indoor cycling training program to guide you along the way. If you're an outdoor cyclist, you can bring your trainer both to classes and the Ride itself. All the info you need to get started is available at OvarianCycle.org, including donation requirements, how to join as a team, and participating clubs.

Already registered? We want to hear the motivation for why you ride. Send your story to christine.bielinski@ovariancycle.org and it may appear in a future newsletter as inspiration to your fellow readers and riders!

Ovarian Cancer in the News: Does the Pill Lower Your Risk?

According to a recent study by British researchers, birth control pills can protect women against ovarian cancer, and the longer women stay on the pill, the lower their risk of developing the disease.

The researchers estimated the pill would prevent more than 30,000 ovarian cancer cases worldwide annually over the next few decades. They said they did not know exactly why the pill provides protection but said the benefits make sense because the drug suppresses the ovaries' function when women are taking it.

While these findings certainly provide cause for optimism, the threat of ovarian cancer remains very real for tens of thousands of women each year - women who need our support more than ever. Ideally, this new research will help scientists and doctors further understand the causes of ovarian cancer so we can continue to work toward a reliable screening test and, one day, a cure.
